Skills to Foster – Next Training Course Coming Up

By June 28, 2022 No Comments

If you’re interested in becoming a foster carer, now’s the time to start the ball rolling. Our next Skills to Foster training course is taking place in late September and you could be on it. This is our third and final course for 2022, the next one will be in 2023.

About the training

Our Skills to Foster course is designed to help prepare you for becoming a foster carer. It will help you learn more about fostering and give you a better idea of what to expect from being a foster carer. The training is led by social workers from our team and is a pre-requisite to an application and assessment. Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll have a feedback session with our social workers to decide if fostering is the right path for you.

The sessions take place over a period of roughly 4 weeks and normally take about 3 days’ worth of time. Participants will have the opportunity to meet our staff team, experienced foster carers, some of the other supporting professionals, some young people who have been in foster care and also the children of foster carers.

We will cover a wide range of topics about fostering and the needs of children who require foster care including:

  • What do Foster Carers Do?
  • Identity and Life Chances
  • Working with others
  • Understanding and caring for children
  • Why children come into care
  • Attachment, separation, and loss
  • Legal process
  • Future training and support

Jenny and her husband attended the training groups at the start of this year. They said:

“We completed the sessions online with other attendees and the training facilitators from the Family Placement Team. We found the training very helpful and informative and are looking forward eagerly to the next stages in our journey to fostering.”

Steps to becoming a foster carer, Enquiry, Skills to foster course, Application and assessment If you would like to participate in the next Skills to Foster course, please get in touch with us by completing the contact form. A member of our team will contact you for a short phone call to gather some basic details from you. If you meet the initial criteria for being a foster carer you’ll be invited to a screening meeting with a social worker from our team for a more in-depth chat. If you still meet our requirements you will then be invited to the training.

After completing the training, you’ll have a formal feedback session with our social workers. With positive feedback you’ll be invited to formally apply to begin the fostering assessment. It is at this stage that we do all the in depth work, for example: your background as a child, your family, references, social work checks, health checks, and to prepare your application to panel.

We run the Skills to Foster course 3 times a year, spaces are limited and priority will be given to people who are currently in a position to foster e.g. you have a spare room in your home.

Our next training course starts in late September – if you’re thinking of fostering, now is the perfect time to get in touch and start the process.
